Meet The Indie Rock Band Who've Been Compared To 80s Springsteen And Classic Dire Straits

They’ll give you glimpses of Springsteen at his most contemplative, Dire Straits at their most profound and Pink Floyd at their most unpresuming. Indeed everyone from Neil Young to Richard Marx has been referenced in trying to describe them. Yet their sound is very much their own. Classic, epic and expansive, yes, but very much their own.

Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs are one of the most critically acclaimed bands on the planet, and are verging on becoming the Next Big Thing, despite the fact they’ve been around since 2005 and main-man Adam Granduciel is not far off 40. And they’ve gotten there by doing things the old way. By making great records,  getting great press and touring their collective arses off.

The War on Drugs toured down under in 2014, playing Victoria’s Meredith Festival and side shows around the country on the back of their third album Lost in the Dream. That album went Gold in the UK and cracked the Top 30 in the US, setting the scene for much anticipation around the August 25 release of their fourth album A Deeper Understanding.

Ahead of A Deeper Understanding, check out three killer tracks from the album and familiarise yourself with the band that’s going to be on every critic’s ‘Best of’ list at the end of the year.
