Buying 'Cool Accidents'

Buying 'Cool Accidents'

Posted

For me most of my vinyl collection was a cool accident. Mainly because I knew a few amazing record selectors at various record stores or labels across Australia who gave me these following gems. I can remember something about each one. An interstate trip, a magic nugget you'd hear upon first listen, a "you must hear this", "these guys are blowing up", and one is actually the first record I put out via my fanzine (the copy I have now is actually one I picked up second hand at redeye after losing my original!).

ANGIE STONE BOOTLEG - SMOOTHIE
This little gem is actually a bootleg which became an official mix by the pound boys of Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You". The great thing about buying dance vinyl is you could never judge a book by its cover. The ugly font, the bright yellow label meant nothing till you heard what was in the grooves. This is still one of favourite house records of all time. Great soaring vocals of love lost with a proper house body. This little gem came from the boys behind the counter at Central Station. Thanks lads.

MJ COLE - SINCERE
I'd heard of a new type of house called speed garage that everyone was talking up. A visit to HMV had me asking about the sound and this was thrust into my hand. Still the quintessential house tune for me. Fans of disclosure take note. This is still a bomb.

THE AVALANCHES - ROCK CITY 7"

Waterfront 1997. Bought on an expedition to Sydney and pre signing to modular. Still amazing.

HAPPENING CHICK - split 7 w/ Screamfeeder, Pollen, Not From There and The Meanies

My first fanzine and my first 7". Along with my friend Greg we put out 4 issues and one 7". We convinced our favourite bands to give us one song to put out. No contract. No paperwork. A simpler time. (This is the found copy).
