Chuck Berry Rocks 90

Chuck Berry Rocks 90

Posted

Okay, so this is cool. Just as we were commenting to ourselves that it seemed that Chuck Berry's 90th birthday was going to slip by without much fanfare, news broke about a new album. His first in 38 years! Read about it here.

Chuck of course is one of the key foundation stones that this thing called ‘rock’ is built upon. More than any other artist perhaps, especially in regards to his songwriting and his guitar playing, Chuck Berry can perhaps be seen as THE major influence on everything that followed in rock and pop.

Here is "Maybellene" written and recorded by Chuck in 1955 and released by Chess records (RIP Phil Chess!). It is considered one of the very first rock n roll songs. Though this might be a restrained version of the rock n roll that we've come to know and love from Chuck (and the many artists who have covered his songs), you can see the wild excitement of rock n roll to come just itching to get out.

I Like Your Old Stuff is happy to be able to present our own little birthday tribute to the man too, with 20 of our favourite Chuck Berry covers, including classics from the Beatles, the Stones, David Bowie, AC/DC (as well as some other Aussies) and the King himself, Elvis. Enjoy!
