Turns out Barbie’s a Bowie fan! Joining the mammoth “Space Oddity” 50th-anniversary celebrations this moth, Mattel has given the iconic doll a glittering makeover of the singer’s alter Ziggy Stardust.

The Bowie Barbie flaunts a body-hugging metallic spacesuit – complete with winged shoulder pads – calf-high red platform boots and shiny silver drop star earrings. Her fiery red hair is slicked back like Ziggy Stardust’s, showing the golden orb that was emblazoned on his forehead. Even her nails have been painted black!

Bowie was an original instigator of gender-bending style and sexual fluidity; perhaps most prominent Ziggy Stardust persona, who Bowie debuted in 1972 with the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, following the breakout success of 1969’s “Space Oddity”.

This is a notably androgynous new look for a doll that has epitomized the stereotypes of femininity for generations. However, in more recent years Barbie has certainly proved herself capable of modernizing, aesthetically and philosophically, taking on the looks of Andy Warhol, Elvis and Frank Sinatra over the past decade. This notably alternative new look for the icon is sure to inspire future generations of young artists to indulge the wild weirdo within; the one that makes them truly unique.

According to Barbie's website, the ‘Bowie Barbie’ is an adult collector’s item that will only be produced in limited quantities. Running at $50, the doll comes with a tailor-made stand and Certificate of Authenticity.

The Barbie website states:  "In a definitive celebration of two pop culture icons, Barbie honors the ultimate pop chameleon, English singer, songwriter and actor, David Bowie, whose dramatic musical transformations continue to influence and inspire. With a career spanning over five decades, David Bowie was at the vanguard of contemporary culture as a musician, artist, and icon. He was, and remains to be, a unique presence in contemporary culture. Dressed as Bowie’s fantastic sci-fi alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, in the iconic metallic ‘space suit,’ this collectable Barbie doll honors the cultural legacy of the musical genius who redefined rock and roll."
