Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren’t just great mates, the pair were an unstoppable creative force. Their enduring friendship was a never-ending wealth of extravagant moments and classic Rockstar exploits but at the heart of their bond was always music.

Whether it’s Bowie’s contribution to Iggy’s seminal solo album Lust for Life (1977) or the moments the pair shared on stage, the partnership hung largely on mutual respect for the other’s art and style of craft, the extent of which is indisputable when looking back at Bowie cover Iggy’s work.

This performance below was filmed at Sydney Entertainment Center during Bowie’s 1987 Glass Spiders tour. Holding court in a fantastic gold jumpsuit, platform boots and, possibly, the 80s most glorious mullet, Bowie delivers a spine-tingling performance of “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. Embracing the 80s rock and roll revelry, he gives the underground anthem a stadium-sized glam makeover in tribute to his fellow artist and friend.

Punk rock wouldn't be what it is today without Iggy Pop and The Stooges. Their raw, frantic and primitive eponymous debut didn’t sell many copies when it was first released in 1969, probably because it was at least a decade ahead of its time, but once pop culture caught up, it was rebranded an instant classic.
