In very sad news today, Gerry Marsden MBE, lead singer of legendary Merseybeat band Gerry & The Pacemakers, has died at the age of 78 following a heart infection.

The news was announced by Marsden's friend and radio broadcaster, Pete Price, who posted on Twitter on Sunday: "It's with a very heavy heart after speaking to the family that I have to tell you the Legendary Gerry Marsden MBE after a short illness which was an infection in his heart has sadly passed away.”

Marsden formed Gerry & The Pacemakers in 1959 and the band were prominent players in Liverpool's Merseybeat movement that included other contemporaries like, The Beatles. Their 1963 version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” became the enduring anthem of the Liverpool Football Club, always sung thunderously by the crowd at their games.

Liverpool F.C. wrote on Twitter: "Gerry’s voice accompanied our biggest nights. His anthem bonded players, staff and fans around the world, helping create something truly special.”

In March this year, 180 radio stations across Europe and the UK, including the BBC, joined forces to simultaneously play “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in a show of solidarity and support to frontline medical workers as the at the height of the coronavirus crisis.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.
