"I GOT THE MONEY, I GOT THE PLACE
YOU GOT THE FIGURE, YOU GOT THE FACE”

Who recognises those opening lines from the fabulous "Glass of Champagne" by Sailor? It was a Top 5 Hit in Australia in 1976 (although we could have sworn this was number 1 on Countdown?), and the band followed it up with the also fabulous "Girls Girls Girls".

The English group was the brainchild of their singer/songwriter Georg Kajanus, who had previously written for Cliff Richard. Interestingly, and according to the all-knowing Wikipedia, “the groups' work included Kajanus' invention, the Nickelodeon, made of pianos, synthesisers, and glockenspiels that allowed the four piece band to reproduce on stage the acoustic arrangements that they had done in the recording studio.”

We’d add that "Glass of Champagne" was possibly written after a lot of listens to Roxy Music’s "Virginia Plain"!
