John Coltrane’s iconic 1960 album, Giant Steps wasn’t just a defining release of his own career, it was one of the most influential releases on the history of music. It was the first time Coltrane had ever released an album entirely of his own compositions, and multiple tracks from the album are now considered jazz standards.

To celebrate the album’s upcoming 60th anniversary, it’s been announced that two new reissues, featuring remastered audio and additional outtakes, will arrive on September 18 (pre-order here). Hear a remastered version of Coltrane’s classic, “Naima” below.

“Giant Steps is exhibit A of how Coltrane’s obsession with the inner mechanics of music could not…and did not…impede his lyrical priority as a soloist, nor his compositional knack for inventing memorable, deeply entrancing melodies,” shares music historian Ashley Kahn.

Giant Steps: 60th Anniversary Deluxe Edition comes with eight alternate takes, packaged in a replica of the original sleeve and labels used for the album’s first stereo pressing, a booklet, never-before-seen photos of Atlantic Records ephemera, original liner notes and new liner by Ashley Kahn. There will be a Super Deluxe Edition available, featuring 20 additional outtakes. You can pre-order both, here.
