Led Zeppelin’s Presence at 45

Led Zeppelin was at the peak of their popularity, riding high on the success of 1975’s Physical Graffiti when they embarked on a monumental world tour. But it was cut short when Robert Plant was seriously injured in a car accident. A forced change of plans saw the band step into the studio instead to record their seventh album, Presence  – released 45 years ago this month.

The album was cut in just 18 days, helmed largely by Jimmy Page who claims to have barely slept throughout the process. With Plant still confined to a wheelchair and restrictions on time, they produced more sparse arrangements that were stripped of the layered keyboard and acoustic guitars found on their previous releases. Instead, the album is marked by dynamic hard rock rhythms and Page’s driven riffs.

The 50s rock inspired lead single, “Candy Store Rock” failed to chart in the form of its predecessors but is considered a favourite by Robert Plant whose love of Elvis sits at the forefront of the track.

When it was first released in March 1976, Presence raced up the charts – an instant number one certified platinum in the U.S. on pre-sales alone –  but fell short of the critical acclaim lauded on Physical Graffiti. However, the band themselves have always rated it among their most important works, a mark of their resilience through turbulent times; and recent years have seen Presence re-evaluated as an early hard rock highlight, praised for its comparative simplicity amidst Led Zep’s epic catalogue.

Celebrate the 45th anniversary of the unplanned seventh album that shines a different light on the legendary rockers with some Presence highlights below!
