In recent weeks, Prince's estate has been gifting us with a steady stream of rarities and unheard recordings from his legendary vault. The songs all appear on the upcoming Sign O’ the Times box set which is out September 25th (pre-order here).

Today, “Forever In My Life (Early Vocal Studio Run-Through)” has been shared from the collection. The upbeat track was recorded on August 8, 1986, at Prince’s Galpin Boulevard home studio and features the prolific artist on every instrument – including drums, bass, guitars and vocals – but is a more stripped-back take than the lusciously layered studio version, revealing the R&B roots the song originated from. The song arrived with a quote from Prince’s former fiancé, Susannah Melvoin recalling the night he made the recording, saying: “He had been up all night and he came upstairs. It was like 7:00 in the morning and he grabbed my hand and said ‘follow me’, and so I followed him downstairs. The sun was coming through the stained-glass windows and he pressed play, and that song came on and I looked at him and I got teary-eyed. And that was it. He didn’t have to say anything.”

Additionally, the Prince Estate also launched a podcast series titled Prince: The Story of ‘Sign O’ The Times, which promises to tell “the story of Sign O’ The Times involves many twists, turns, and abandoned projects. We begin with key collaborators Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman as they reflect on Prince's prolific Dream Factory period…” – Listen here.
