We’re revisiting The Cure’s incredible cover of Joy Division’s seminal post-punk anthem, “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” that was recorded live, backstage at Brisbane’s Livid Festival in 2000. The band’s signature goth-pop spin brings a twisted sense of optimism to the stylistically mechanical original without subtracting from the desolate sentiment at its the heart. Not many artists are qualified to channel the depth of emotion emanating from the late Ian Curtis, but in the hands of Robert Smith, the cover is a triumph.

The Cure succeed in making the track feel like one of their own with Smith’s slightly shy and delicate interpretation of Ian Curtis’ stark vocal delivery, paired with the unmistakable bounce of the Simon Gallup and Jason Cooper rhythm section that instantly turns the song into something you’d expect to hear on The Cure’s next album.

Joy Division first recorded "Love Will Tear Us Apart" at Pennine Studios, in January 1980 with producer, Martin Hannett, who’s distinctive production style utilized unorthodox recording techniques and technology to create the sparse, spatial, and cavernous sound so inherent to Joy Division’s music.
