Neil Young’s third studio album, After The Gold Rush celebrated it’s 50th anniversary in September this year. To mark the occasion, Young has announced a new reissue will arrive on CD on December 11th, followed by a vinyl box set edition set to be released in March next year.

With the news, Young has been sharing some previously unreleased recordings and alternate versions of his classic tracks – something we have become somewhat accustomed to from the prolific artist this year!

The latest sonic gem Young has unveiled is a previously unreleased version of one his most popular cuts, “Powderfinger” off his 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. The tack has been covered by many bands over the years, and is the namesake of Brisbane indie-rock Alumni, Powderfinger.

This early version was recorded on June 12, 1975, in California, produced by Young and David Briggs. Featuring Crazy Horse members, Frank “Poncho” Sampedro on guitar, Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums. You can listen via the Neil Young Archives, here. Or follow the links below.

Ahead of the new reissue, Young also shared an alternative unreleased version of ‘Wonderin” from 1983’s Everybody’s Rockin’ which came with an official video featuring archive photos of Young. Watch below.

Young has shared an epic amount of new and unreleased material throughout this year from his lost 1974-75 album Homegrown which was finally given the release it deserved, 45 years after it was recorded (available here); to his protest EP The Times that included modern re-workings of his 1970s protest songs that find renewed meaning in 2020 (pre-order here).

Ahead of December’s After The Gold Rush reissue, we also have Young’s extensive vault dive arriving on November 20th, Archives Vol. II: 1972–1976 which features 12 previously unreleased songs, alongside 50 new versions of classic tracks (pre-order, here).

At this point, he may just be on track to set a record for the most amount of records released in a year!
