Radio Birdman Included In 1978 U.S. ‘Best Of New Wave Rock Songbook’

This was a cool little find and something we’ve not seen before. From 1978, on Warner Brothers Books out of New York, this songbook (one of those things full of sheet music) includes Australia’s own Radio Birdman alongside an array of artists including the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Talking Heads, Stranglers and a bunch of others. We’re not exactly sure who assembled it, but given that everybody pictured on the front cover, including Birdman, had albums out that year on Sire Records, we assume they had something to do with it. Or it may have been a Warner Music publishing initiative. Anyway, it’s really neat, and whilst missing some obvious stuff (The Saints, who were on Warner in the US but not the UK, The Clash, Buzzcocks etc) it does include some curio’s, including Sire’s signing out of Boston, DMZ.

The back cover lists the contents by song title – the first person who can name the artists responsible for each of the tracks can bask in the glow of being ILYOS’ Prime Punk Picker for the month of June!

Don’t forget to check out Radio Birdman on tour now, and you can hear a fair bunch of these tracks on our great ‘Shake Some Action’ playlist on Spotify
