This is one of the most famous “customised” t-shirts of all time - the Sex Pistols added “I Hate” in felt tip, to a Pink Floyd shirt. Tore the sleeves off, and created a revolution and a state of mind.
And Pink Floyd instantly became bloated, pompous and flatulent. For good.
We don’t want to argue with that really. A lot of Floyd really is dull pomp rock, but for a bit they really were the best acid band ever.
And that time was when Syd Barrett drove the spaceship.
Barrett was the original dandy in the underworld, a lysergic dreamchild. And the Floyd were the natural step after "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", taking pop on the next stage of its (chemically-induced) journey.
This is how good it was:
...and that’s why The Pistols had it wrong - The Piper At The Gates of Dawn is a great punk album.
It's 10 years since beautiful Syd died.
And even more since he disappeared into mental health issues.
Since the mind that talked about music in a way we could all understand... "Perhaps we could make the middle darker and maybe the end a bit middle afternoonish. At the moment it's too windy and icy"
...lost itself.
But it doesn’t seem that way when you listen to this:
...the last laughs of the Madcap. The last rumbles of genius.
Before Floyd died and blew up.
