Punk provocateur, Joey Ramone was born on this day in 1951.

Despite the Ramones' rather humble chart performance in their day, the band personified an archetype of authenticity, boldly at odds with their flamboyant predecessors and unmatched by their peers – arguably unmatched to this day. Ramones may not have graduated from the clubs to reach the heights of chart-topping superstars during their career but, in 2022, a global retrospective has elevated their legacy well beyond such realms of success; decades of hindsight have proved the Ramones to be eternal icons, an archetype of cool born from raw expression.

The ethos of punk will be forever shaped by their game-changing explosion on New York’s late 70s underground punk scene. In honour of what would have been the band’s benevolent, heroically humble and impossibly cool frontman, Joey Ramone’s 71st birthday today, let’s enjoy this golden slice of pure, unadulterated punk with the band’s 1992 performance of Pet Sematary in 1992.
