It’s Dave Grohl’s birthday today (Jan 14), which is the only excuse we need to go digging through the archives of his legendary career. From drumming in Nirvana, fronting the Foo Fighters, forming the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones on bass, and performing live with music’s greatest icons, like David Bowie and the Queen herself, Stevie Nicks… Which is where we will take you now.

After producing a documentary film called Sound City about the famous Los Angeles studio – where everyone from Nirvana to Fleetwood Mac recorded their breakthrough albums – Grohl formed a supergroup called the Sound City Players with the musicians who appeared in the film; including Nirvana bassist, Kris Novoselic, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, NIN’s Trent Reznor, QOTSA’s Josh Homme, Rick Neilson from Cheap Trick, Rick Springfield, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks and more. Massive!

With Stevie Nicks fronting the band, joined by Grohl and a selection of the other players – it would be impossible to get them all together at once – the group made a total of five live appearances, including their debut performance at the Sundance Film Festival and just weeks after, this fierce performance of Nicks’ “You Can’t Fix This” on The Letterman Show.
