Seattle has shown their everlasting love for local heroes, Mudhoney recently, with over 35k residents voting to name a massive tunnel boring machine after the grunge legends.
The public naming contest was held by Seattle Public Utilities who will use the machine to build storage space for the Ship Canal Water Quality Project — and “MudHoney” was the winner! Other close contenders included “Daphne,” “Molly the Mole,” “Boris the Plunger,” and “Sir Digs-A-Lot” (a reference to Seattle rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot).
The band attended the unveiling of the brightly emblazoned piece of machinery on Friday (April 9), check out the pictures below.
According to Seattle Public Utilities, the MudHoney boring machine will begin digging a 45km long storage tunnel 5.7 metres in diameter later this year.
They said in a statement: “Since the late ’80s, Mudhoney, the Seattle-based foursome whose muck-crusted version of rock, shot through with caustic wit and battened down by a ferocious low end, has taken a stand against overflows in our waterways.”
