There’s only really one rule in rock – No Stairway! But it would seem that U2’s Bono and the Edge found the perfect reason to break it. With little more than an acoustic guitar and an iPhone, the pair delivered an abridged rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic, to honour their long-time road crew who are, apparently, big fans of the track. The pair bust out the heckler favorite during their Songs From an Empty Room set; a program featuring live music by Irish artists that was broadcast this past Satuday night.

“There’s one annoying aspect of an Irish crew that has to be said,” Bono says. “Wherever you go in the world, whatever venue you’re playing … whether it’s the Olympia or 3 Arena or Madison Square Garden … you walk into the venue and it’s a big moment, and you’ll hear a song that we said, ‘We’ll never, ever play this.’ And that’s right, ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ These professionals believe they play this better than the band. And you know, it might be true.”
