David Crosby, co-founder of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash has died, aged 81.

The sad news was confirmed by Crosby’s wife, who said in a statement to Variety, "It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers."

Crosby was born in Los Angeles in 1941. He joined the Byrds in 1964, alongside Gene Clark, Jim McGuinn and Chris Hillman, who scored a number-one hit in 1965 with a cover of Bon Dylan’s Tambourine Man.

A year after the Byrds disbanded in 1967, Crosby founded Crosby, Stills & Nash with fellow folk rock icons, Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash from the Hollies. CS&N’s eponymous debut album, a defining record of L.A.’s Laurel Canyon scene in the late-60s, arrived in 1969 and earned them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Soon after, Neil Young, who had previously playing in Buffalo Springfield with Stills, joined the lineup. CSN&Y were classic rock’s pioneer supergroup, performing their second show ever together at Woodstock in 1969. Despite the band members’ stormy relations, together they produced crystalline classics, timeless to this day.

Together, Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) released eight studio albums, including 1970’s ‘Déjà Vu’ which sold in the multi-millions. Despite CSN&Y’s multiple break ups and reunions over the years, and Crosby’s personal troubles stemming from a hedonistic lifestyle, he produced a staggering amount of music across his career. He released a number of solo albums, starting with If I Could Only Remember My Name in 1971, and also appeared on stacks of classic albums by the likes of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Elton John and more.

Crosby was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, in 1991 with the Byrds and again in 1997 with CS&N, making them the first band to have all members inducted twice.

Tributes have been pouring in for the legendary rocker, with Crosby’s former bandmate Graham Nash expressing his “profound sadness” at the news.

“I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together,” Nash shared in a statement. “He leaves behind a tremendous void.”

We’re looking back to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s classic 1970 album Déjà Vu – the band's first with Neil Young on board and one of the greatest class rock albums of all time.

'Déjà Vu' (1970)

The first album from David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash set a remarkable standard both for artistic quality and commercial success, and expectations for a follow-up were high. Déjà Vu did not disappoint; the group upped the ante with the addition of Neil Young to the line-up and with four strong songwriters and a pair of fiery guitarists now in the fold, sparks flew. Teach Your Children, Our House and Woodstock each became Top 40 hits, but tracks like Young’s Helpless, Crosby’s Almost Cut My Hair and the Stills-Young-penned Everybody I Love You are equally distinctive. Woodstock 1969 was one of the biggest music festivals of all time. Nearly half a million people, charged with a huge potential for disaster, spent the three harmonious days, celebrating music, dancing in the mud and sleeping in the grass at a dairy farm near in New York state. It was an epic triumph of peace and love.

It was that one weekend where, against all odds, everything aligned. Free love, cheap drugs and rock’n’roll came together to create one of the defining moments of 60s counter-culture.The festival ran from August 15 to 18, as the three days unfolded, more than 400,000 people descended on a tranquil country town. It was only about 350,000 more than organisers were expecting...

The influx of attendees caused one of the biggest traffic jams of all time on the roads of Bethel. Highways and local roads came to a standstill and many concert-goers simply abandoned their cars and trekked the rest of the way on foot.

Indian Hindu religious teacher, Swami Satchidananda (1914 - 2002) delivered the opening speech at the Woodstock Music Festival to a crowd of almost 500,000.

“My Beloved Brothers and Sisters, I am overwhelmed with joy to see the entire youth of America gathered here in the name of the fine art of music. In fact, through the music, we can work wonders. Music is a celestial sound and it is the sound that controls the whole universe, not atomic vibrations. The Incredible String Band were originally slated to appear on Day 1, which featured the folk and acoustic acts, but refused to play in the rain. They were rescheduled for Saturday, providing a sweet folk-pop breather between rockers, Keef Hartley and Canned Heat.

Carlos Santana and his band were the only act to play at Woodstock without a record out, but thanks to an extended instrumental jam called “Soul Sacrifice” that the band closed their set with, they found themselves suddenly in high demand around the world.

"By the time we got to 'Soul Sacrifice', I had come back from a pretty intense journey. Ultimately, I felt we had plugged in to a whole lot of hearts at Woodstock." - Carlos Santana.

At 5am on Sunday just before the Jefferson Airplane took the stage, The Who played their rock opera titled Tommy, the story of a deaf, dumb, and blind boy who is cured of his ailments and gains stardom. It was a legendary performance.

Bad weather made for a scheduling nightmare! Bands were pushed back up to 12 hours, meaning that Jefferson Airplane's Saturday night set became a Sunday morning service instead. Following the Who’s well-received set, the Airplane plugged in and woke up anyone who’d dared to fall asleep. “Alright, friends,” Grace Slick addressed the sea of humans, “you have seen the heavy groups. Now you will see morning maniac music. Believe me, yeah, it’s a new dawn.”

Safe to say, most people probably had no idea that time even existed by that point.

Thirty-two acts performed including some of the most popular and influential musicians of the era such as Joan Baez, The Band, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone.

This week in 1970, Crosby Stills Nash & Young went to number one on the US album chart with Deja Vu – their first album to feature cantankerous folk icon, Neil Young. We’re revisiting the album's three Top 40 singles, Teach Your Children, Our House and Woodstock, that each remain classics to this day.

With Neil Young added to the lineup, CSNY were undeniably the folk-rock era’s seminal supergroup. Déjà Vu is a sentimental collection that reflects, with crystal vision, the idealistic and optimistic sentiments of the times. Despite what can only be described as a fragile balance of egos between the band’s four members, all legendary in their own rights, the songs come together with a powerful collective acumen, proving that you don’t have to get along to share a path to greatness.

Perhaps the album (and the band’s) most well-known hit, Teach Your Children was penned by Graham Nash. It surmises the late ’60s with gilded goals of a better future, one not out of reach with the power of foreplanning.

Another Nash penned single from Deja Vu, Our House pays homage “to countercultural domestic bliss", and was written when Nash was living with fellow folk icon, Joni Mitchell while recording the album.

Speaking of Joni Mitchell, her own track Woodstock was covered by CSNY and released as a single from Deja Vu. The band gave the song the definitive treatment, with layers of luscious guitars and vocal harmonies that echo Mitchell’s gentle presence.

The Altamont Speedway Free Festival took place in December 1969 and was attended by over 300,000 people. Although the event, heavily attended by Hells Angels members, infamously descended into mayhem and violence, the lineup was incredible, featuring performances by The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills & Nash and more.

Now, previously unseen footage of the concert has been shared for the first time by Britain’s Library of Congress. The footage comes from archivist Rick Prelinger’s 200,000-reel collection that was given over to the Library this year and found on “two reels of silent 8mm reversal positive – a common home movie format” which was accompanied by a handwritten note that read “Stones in the Park,” according to the library’s Head of Moving Image Section, Mike Mashon.

While footage of the event has previously appeared in the Maysles Brothers’ documentary Gimme Shelter, this latest glimpse has never been seen before. The video comes without audio, but captures priceless performances by the Rolling Stones, CSNY and more, performing live with Hells Angels guarding the stage, as well as showing them hanging out in the crowd. “When I saw that, I immediately thought that it could be a home movie of the July 5, 1969, Rolling Stones Hyde Park concert held in London a couple of days after the death of guitarist Brian Jones,” Mashon wrote. “But it could also be a copy of a documentary of the same name, which would make the discovery considerably less interesting.”

“Regardless, I sent the reels up for 2K digitization by our film preservation laboratory. A couple of days later, I heard from some very excited colleagues that the scan wasn’t the Hyde Park show. It was from the Altamont Speedway concert in California and it definitely wasn’t footage from the 1970 documentary. Many people know the Gimme Shelter documentary pretty well, but there’s a lot more in this home movie.”

Graham Nash has announced a new archival photo book titled A Life in Focus: The Photography of Graham Nash, featuring decades of his art and photos, which will be arriving on November 16th. Pre-order, here.

The classic rock legend, best known as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Hollies, explains that he actually picked up a camera before the guitar, inspired by his father to take up photography at age 10.

“From a very early age, photography has always been an extremely important part of my life and has allowed me to express a different side of my personality than music,” Nash said in a statement. “In fact, I’ve been taking photographs longer than I’ve been making music.”

According to a press release, A Life in Focus, captures “intimate moments with family and friends,” featuring images captured on tour, abroad and with friends in the famed Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles. However, it must be noted that those “friends” include Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Bob Dylan among others.

Nash also offers his own personal memories behind the images, with filmmaker and journalist Cameron Crowe adding to the commentary.

Recently, Nash reflected on CSNY’s Deja Vu 50th anniversary reissue that arrived with four CDs worth extras, including demos, alternate versions and unreleased studio recordings, including a previously unheard demo of Young’s Birds accompanied by Nash.

“I know it’s just me and Neil doing it with his acoustic guitar, but that’s a beautiful piece of music,” Nash told Rolling Stone at the time. “It’s me trying to be the best harmony singer I can be with somebody of the stature of Neil Young."

Neil Young’s vast catalogue of music is a journey through genres, from delicate folk, country rock discordant psychedelic grunge and all that falls in between. Over the past five decades, he has released a prolific amount of music as a solo artist, and as a member of iconic bands like Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. But no matter where his mood leads him, there is a continuous thread of stark honesty running trough his entire body of work, turning it collectively into some sort of almanac of inescapable truths that, while not always comfortable to hear, are good for the soul.

In June this year, Young released what is technically his fortieth album, Homegrown, but it’s far from new. The 12 songs were recorded between June 1974 and January 1975 and originally intended to come out in 1975. But Neil cancelled the release, deeming the album too personal. In a 1975 Rolling Stone interview, Young described Homegrown as “the darker side” of Harvest – not a particularly upbeat album in itself – and told him: “A lot of the songs had to do with me breaking up with my old lady. It was a little too personal. . . It scared me.”

Homegrown features some music’s biggest stars of the era, including EmmyLou Harris and Robbie Robertson, and immortalises a moment in time when Young and his CSNY bandmates were learning the lessons of success and consequences of excess. Now, after 46 years, the wounds have healed (enough), and Young has finally released the mysterious ‘lost’ album that has achieved legendary status over time, with fans left to wonder about the album too emotionally raw for an artist iconised by his rawness.

Opening track, “Separate Ways” is a meditation of acceptance with a timeless theme of moving on. As the story goes – after learning that his wife had taken off on a five-day Hawaiian boat trip with another man, Young threw his heartbroken self into a 24-date tour with Crosby, Stills and Nash, that would ultimately be coined “the Doom Tour” by David Crosby. Despite being one of the highest-grossing tours of all time, thanks to an endless list of expensive indulgences, it earned the group very little money and strained already tenuous relations further.

Mostly the album is compiled of stripped-back love songs, a far cry from the unapologetic discordant distortion of 1979’s Rust Never Sleeps, but as equally shaded by light and dark, and perhaps even more menacing for its restraint.

On the other end of the spectrum is “Florida,” a two and a half minute spoken-word number where Young tells a story about visiting a sunny town, where everyone’s wearing “nice pants” and drinking pop until a free-falling hang-glider crashes into a family and Young rescues their baby… or so he thinks.

There's also a stack of classic sounding tracks like “Love Is a Rose,” “Little Wing” and “White Line” that have all appeared as alternate versions on other albums over the years.

Joni Mitchell’s third studio album from 1970, Ladies Of The Canyon is neither her biggest seller or her most famous yet was home to some of her most well-loved songs, including “Woodstock,” “The Circle Game” and her revolutionary hit, “Big Yellow Taxi.”

Straight out of the gate, “Big Yellow Taxi” throws Joni’s extraordinary rhythm work on the guitar into the spotlight. Her staggered vocal delivery in the verses make each word break through your consciousness, imploring you to pay attention to every detail of the important story she's telling you. And it's a timeless story, as important today as it was the day she wrote it.

Mitchell recorded Ladies of the Canyon after moving to LA from Canada, via New York. The expanse of this adjustment sits at the centre of this joyous album. In the title track, Mitchell pays homage to the city’s sunny, bohemian, west coast ways of life, as she turns her gaze outward with rose-coloured perspective to find her place in the post-hippie/counter-culture scene gathering momentum in California at the dawn of the 1970s.

The sophisticated, self-produced set of songs also marked a period of rapid musical development for Mitchell who builds a rich sonic palette with the addition of strings, piano, clarinet, saxophone and percussion to her signature prairie soprano vocals and idiosyncratic guitar tunings.

Even the complexity of Joni’s relationship with the members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young failed to dial down the sunshine in her heart as she celebrates the gathering of her tribe on the track "Woodstock" – not that she ever actually made it to Woodstock, as she explains in this enchanting live video below.

And for her friend and fellow countryman, Neil Young, Joni wrote one of the album’s more recognisable tracks, jazzy closer, “The Circle Game” in response to his song “Sugar Mountain” which he wrote in 1964 at the tender age of 19. Speaking live in concert in London in 1970, Mitchell said: “[Young] wrote that was called ‘Oh to live on a Sugar Mountain’ which was a lament to his youth. And I thought, God, you know, if we get to 21 and there’s nothing after that, that’s a pretty bleak future. So, I wrote a song for him, and for myself just to give me some hope. It’s called ‘The Circle Game.’”

Chances are, now half a century later, as Neil Young sings in front of the fire at his Colorado ranch with wife Darryl Hannah by his side, he would now agree with Joni that there is indeed more than one Sugar Mountain to climb in life.

Ladies of the Canyon delivers Joni’s full range of talents, as a singer, songwriter, storyteller, poet and musician, with a captivating innocence that shines through like a ray of golden light – much like Joni herself.

Their voices blend together to create a majestic gospel chorus and Joe delivers a showstopping bridge. Even their valiantly varied dance styles make for an unlikely perfect match.

Tom Jones & Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young | “Long Time Gone” [This is Tom Jones, 1969]

Tom is clearly overjoyed to be singing over the buttery harmonies on a stage jam-packed with future legends. Neil Young more or less invents the amped-up rock revolution that would arrive a decade or so later when he crashes in with an anachronistic searing guitar solo at 2:05. The mischievous look on his face suggests he knows exactly what he’s doing.

Tom Jones & Janis Joplin | “Raise Your Hand” [This is Tom Jones, 1969]

Tom Jones meets his match in Janis Joplin on their duet of “Raise Your Hand” in 1969. Right out of the gate, Janis stakes her claim with the type of wildly confident, bluesy entrance that, judging by the look on Tom’s face, he never dreamed possible. You can almost see the moment his mind implodes as she stumbles over the word “crying” at 16 seconds in. Tom recovers and boldly holds his own, but it turns out Janis was just getting warmed up. He surrenders to her unbeatable scream in the breakdown, happily go-go dancing his way to the end, totally in awe of his electrifying adversary.

In the latest instalment of Rolling Stones’ new ‘In My Room’ IGTV series, in which musicians perform from their homes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Graham Nash has laid down some Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young classics, sitting at the piano of his New York City apartment.

Nash played three tracks from CSNY’s Déj Vu, an album that turned 50 this month. Prior to playing, he addressed the camera with, “a shout out to all the medical people, all the postmen and postwomen. All the people that are risking their lives to make our lives better. And we need to help them, too…we need to stay home. We need to not spread this virus. Talking about being at home, why don’t I sing “Our House” for you?”

He then shifted to the acoustic guitar to play “4 + 20,” a song written by Stephen Stills that “completely amazed” Nash when he first heard it. Nash ended with “Teach Your Children,” and a reminder to look after each other, saying: “We’re all in this together. We will make it together. Stay at home, wash your hands, don’t spread the virus.”
