The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, known more affectionately as the Ziggy Stardust album was ahead of its time even 45 years ago. Bowie’s concept album about a fictional rockstar/alter ego who acts as a messenger for aliens was known for its social commentary, sexual innuendo and glam-rock themes.

As an album it has received critical acclaim, often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time according to Q, Rolling Stone and Time magazines. In 2017, the album was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" by the Library of Congress.

Bowie’s flamboyant outfits worn whilst playing the character of Ziggy only lifted his stage presence to ground-breaking levels.
