An all-star livestream concert celebrating what would have been David Bowie’s 75th birthday has been announced for next year.
Taking place on the late icon’s actual birthday, January 8th, the event will feature appearances from his closest friends and collaborators, including long term members of Bowie’s band, members of Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Living Colour, actors Ricky Gervais, Gary Oldman and more.
“It’s an honour to be able to continue to share David Bowie’s music with the world,” Bowie’s longtime keyboardist Mike Garson told Rolling Stone.
“I’m excited for everyone to be able to experience this very special show we’ve got in store in celebration of what would have been David’s 75th birthday with the bandmates he recorded and performed with, plus a great group of guest artists who he was such an influence to.”
Tickets to the event are on sale now via RollingLiveStudios, here.
Last month, a previously unseen video of Bowie performing one of his earliest singles, Can’t Help Thinking About Me was unearthed. The song was originally released in 1965 and was the first he released under the name David Bowie, after changing his name from David Jones.
In 1999, Bowie revisited Can’t Help Thinking About Me while working on Toy, an album of re-recorded songs from his earliest days that was ultimately shelved before being released. The song also became a setlist regular at live shows thought that year’s Hours tour. You can watch one of those performances, recorded live on October 14, 1999, at the Elysée Montmartre in Paris, below.
Toy has now seen its first official release as part of the David Bowie 5. Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001) box set, the fifth instalment of the ongoing Brilliant Adventure series, chronicling Bowie’s incredible career from 1969 into the 21st century. The box set includes vinyl versions of Toy plus other Bowie albums, a hardcover book and more. Get it here.
A special edition of the Toy album, Toy: Box available in 3CD/6 10” vinyl formats, will follow on January 7th, one day before Bowie’s birthday. Pre-order, here.
