David Cassidy was best known for his role as Keith Partridge, the son of Shirley Partridge, in the 1970s musical-sitcom The Partridge Family, which led to his becoming one of popular culture's teen idols and pop singers of the 1970s.

David became a huge international star when he took the role of Keith Partridge at just 20. As well as being a pin-up adored by screaming fans, he used the musical numbers in the show to springboard his own pop career.

Following a period of illness, David's death was confirmed today by his publicist JoAnn Geffen with a statement from his family. “On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy. David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years.”
