Legendary Australian singer, Renee Geyer has passed away aged 69.

Known for her unmistakably commanding and husky vocal, Geyer was a trailblazer who stacked the Aussie songbook with soulful hits in a career spanning 15 studio albums and 50 years.

In a statement, Geyer's family said the singer passed away from complications following hip surgery.

"While in hospital, it was discovered that Renée also had inoperable lung cancer," the statement read.

"She was in no pain and died peacefully amongst family and friends. Naturally, we are all utterly devastated.”

"Renée was irrepressible, cheeky, and loyal and her musical legacy speaks for itself, with her performing and recording career spanning five decades," the statement said.

"(She) lived her life as she performed – on her own terms and to the fullest. Beloved and respected, she was a force of nature and a national treasure, and her passing leaves a giant void in the Australian music industry."

The Melbourne-born artist shot to fame in the 70s with a series of soul hits. In 2005, Geyer was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, and in 2013, became the first woman to be inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame in 2013.

Vale to an Aussie icon.
