Black Sabbath unleashed their blazing second album, Paranoid in the U.S. this week in January 1971 (after debuting in their U.K. homeland a few months prior). It was a monster of heavy rock, home to many of their biggest tracks, including Iron Man, War Pigs and the title track, Paranoid. Beyond influential, the album remains a foundation of heavy metal, a fundamental stepping stone in the genre’s evolution.

Check out their legendary performance of Paranoid on Top of the Pops in 1970, a truly stand-out moment in the show’s colourful history as Ozzy and the band introduce their heavy, bleak psychedelic rock to a prime-time audience.
