Neil Diamond has given his classic song “Sweet Caroline” a very modern update in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
"I know we're going through a rough time right now, but I love ya," the singer stated in a video posted to Twitter. "I think, maybe if we sing together, well, we'll just feel a little bit better. Give it a try, okay?"
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, sits comfortably by his fireside with an acoustic guitar to perform a socially responsible rendition his classic 1969 hit. When he reaches the song’s famous chorus, Diamond reveals his updated lyrics to reflect modern times. Instead of “Hands, touching hands / Reaching out / Touching me, touching you,” he sings, “Hands, washing hands / Reaching out / Don’t touch me, I won’t touch you.”

It’s not the first time Neil Diamond has thrown himself forward for a good cause. In 2018, six months on from announcing he would retire from touring after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the singer staged an impromptu performance for Colorado firefighters battling a nearby wildfire. Diamond joins a long list of celebrities using their influential powers for good, stepping up with a growing list of creative PSA’s to promote hand hygiene and social distancing.
