Check out this great and very early – black & white – footage of the fabulous B-52’s, shot some 18 months before the release of their debut album, and a good few months even before the release of their first single, the early and independently release version of “Rock Lobster” that was different to the familiar hit version.

This footage, shot in their home town of Atlanta Georgia, kicks off with the original B-side of “Rock Lobster”, “52 Girls” and shows the band had their thing down early. Jump to 27:00 to hear a crazy “Rock Lobster”, which really gets the crowd going.

The B-52s originally formed in 1976, and took their name from a particular style of 1960’s beehive hairdo. They picked and pushed the ‘60s kitsch aspects of the new wave, including the clothes and twangy guitars, and were really the first band to take that sort of Thrift Store/Op Shop chic to the mainstream.

John Lennon was a fan and is even reported to have said that the B-52’s were the inspiration for him to get back into the studio to record "Double Fantasy" in 1980.

Of course, you can check out the band’s classic debut on Spotify whenever you feel like a listen, here

And you can hear the B-52s on at least a couple of our other playlists too, including
