Led Zeppelin's First American Tour

Led Zeppelin's First American Tour

Posted

This week, in 1969, Led Zeppelin played four nights at the famous Whisky A Go-Go in Los Angeles. It was the band's first North American tour and Alice Cooper was their supporting act.

Led Zeppelin's debut album was not to be released in the US until the following week so many didn't know who they were apart from Jimmy Page's pedigree with The Yardbirds.

The full tour ran from December 26th through to February 16th and the set-list comprised typically of these songs, with a couple of slight substitutions and variations;

  1. "Train Kept A-Rollin' "
  2. "I Can't Quit You Baby"
  3. "As Long As I Have You"
  4. "Dazed and Confused"
  5. "Communication Breakdown"
  6. "You Shook Me"
  7. "White Summer"/"Black Mountain Side"
  8. "Pat's Delight"
  9. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"
  10. "How Many More Times"
  11. "Killing Floor"
  12. "For Your Love"

The average fee charged by Led Zeppelin for a concert during this tour was around $1,500 (USD). It has been stated that for one show they performed for a mere $320. Figures like these would soon be dwarfed by the six-figure sums routinely demanded, and received, by Led Zeppelin on subsequent tours as their popularity skyrocketed.

Originally the tour was booked for Jeff Beck however due to cancellation, their manager Peter Grant - who managed both groups - decided to put Led Zeppelin in their place, originally as a support band but it was soon apparent they outshined the headliners Country Joe and the Fish, so were moved up to headline!
