When Australian music icons and long-time collaborators, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis put their heads together they make for an unstoppable creative force - one that has produced work by The Bad Seeds, The Dirty Three and the magically progressive Grinderman. But you may not be aware of the extensive work these two men have also composed for film.

The Film Music of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will be presented as part of the 68th Melbourne International Film Festival in August and will see the duo collaborate with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to perform selections of their soundtracks from films, The Proposition, The Road, Hell or High Water, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, West of Memphis and Wind River

Cave and Ellis have received widespread acclaim for their film scores, which tend to be effectively chilling and dystopian in nature. These two exclusive performances will provide a rare opportunity for fans to see the work brought to life with an orchestra.

‘’Very often a tension can happen between music and picture that is about chance and a kind of unknowingness that can be really amazing,” Cave said in a statement. “Just by putting together two things that were created in isolation, music and film, suddenly something quite magical can happen.” [via The Music]

Nick Cave was last in Australia this January for a series of solo Q&A shows and Warren Ellis will return this coming May to perform with his band The Dirty Three as a part of the Vivid LIVE program at the Sydney Opera House

MSO Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey said: “This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the work and creativity of two outstanding composers who have made a significant and lasting contribution to Australian music. I know everybody at the MSO is deeply committed to this project and I see it as one of our most exciting and artistically meaningful collaborations to date.”
