Here’s some good news for anyone who missed out on the Patti Smith Australian tour dates, which were postponed this year due to coronavirus restrictions. In what is being billed as her only staged event of 2020, Smith has announced that an upcoming reading of excerpts from her most recent memoir, Year of the Monkey, featuring short set with her long-time bandmate Tony Shanahan, will be live-streamed globally on September 5th in Austalia.

Year of the Monkey was released in 2019 and follows on from Smith’s previous two memoirs; 2010’s Just Kids, an endearing retrospective of her early career and friendship with renowned artist, Robert Mapplethorpe; and 2015’s M Train documenting her course following the release of her 1975 debut album Horses

As per a statement about the book, Year of the Monkey picks up in 2016 when “Smith finds herself tramping the coast of Santa Cruz, about to embark on a year of solitary wandering. Unfettered by logic or time, she draws us into her private wonderland with no design, yet heeding signs--including a talking sign that looms above her, prodding and sparring like the Cheshire Cat.”

“…For Smith – inveterately curious, always exploring, tracking thoughts, writing – the year evolves as one of reckoning with the changes in life's gyre: with loss, aging, and a dramatic shift in the political landscape of America.”

The special event, titled An Evening of Words & Music With Patti Smith, will take place at the Murmrr Theatre in Brooklyn and be captured by cinematographer, Matthew Schroeder in what promises to be a“high-end multi-camera visual and sonic experience.” Tickets will cost $42 each and include a paperback copy of the book. The event will be broadcasting digitally on September 5th at 7pm in Australia – find out more and get tickets, here.

Last month, Byron Bay Blues Festival hopefully announced that Patti Smith would return to headline the rescheduled 2021 event in April next year – read more, here.
