If you are looking to ring in the New Year with a real bang, Phil Collins has you covered! Because, while there are endless ways to celebrate the moment the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, this is surely the most magical one.

It all started back in 2017 when Twitter users began sharing instructions on how to make the climax of certain songs coincide with midnight on NYE. The legendary drummer was quick to join the party, revealing the trick to having the iconic drum break of his classic track, “In the Air Tonight” hit when the clock strikes 12.

“If you play ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins on December 31st at 11:56:40 the drum break will play right as the clock strikes midnight. Start off your New Year right,” he tweeted.

Of course, the Internet was delighted at the prospect of testing out Collins’ theory!

The song topped the charts in both 1981 and 1984 after being used in the opening episode of the TV Series, Miami Vice. It was also featured in several feature films including Risky Business (1983) and The Hangover (2009).

Of course, the timing depends on which version of the song you play. Phil’s instructions are based on the official 1981 single version, which clocks in at 4m 57s. However, the album cut is 5m 34s and the video is 4m 53s, so be sure to give yourself a test run ahead of time to get the magical moment just right.

And, because Phil really wants to make sure you “start your New Year right,” he has also gifted us with this excellent Phil Collins NYE Playlist to keep your party spirits at an all-time high. Enjoy!
