Very sad news that legendary Brazilian singer and composer João Gilberto, a pioneer of the Bossa Nova genre, has died aged 88 on Saturday.

João Gilberto created a “new beat”, with his unique guitar style, mixing traditional samba music with modern jazz influences in the late 1950s, creating standards in World Music with his versions of “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Quiet Nights”.

In 2000, Gilberto won a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album and later that year was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall Of Fame.

A song that was also covered by Frank Sinatra...
