Spotlight On The 90s - Deadstar

Posted

Double J’s Best 50 Australian Songs of the 90s certainly seems to have attracted a fair bit of interest. We’ve already covered off on a bunch of favourites here and over the rest of the month we’ll look individually at a few more.

Let’s venture to Melbourne, and a band who came and went fairly quickly but still left a mark, deadstar, with "Deeper Water"

Deadstar – or more correctly, deadstar - formed in 1995, originally as a studio project led by guitarist and songwriter Barry Jones, who at the time was also a member of Hunters & Collectors. On drums was Barry’s old mate Peter Jones who at the time was playing with Crowded House; Barry and Peter had previously played together in alternative faves Harem Scarem. On vocals was Caroline Kennedy, who’d made a name for herself around Melbourne with indie folk-pop band the Plums. The band was immediately signed to Mushroom and ended up releasing 3 albums and accumulating a few hits. At one point in the middle, Nick Seymour of Crowded House joined on bass.

Following the band’s demise, Barry Palmer focussed on writing and producing and was involved in the likes of The Mavis’s "Cry", 28 Days’  "Rip It Up"  and Vika and Linda’s "Love Comes Easy". Kennedy and Jones continued to work in Melbourne; Jones sadly passed away in 2012.

You can check out ‘Deeper Water’ on our new ‘90s Oz’ playlist on Spotify.

And because they’re great, here are a couple more from them:
