Returning to Australia in November for shows with his solo band, English singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Steven Wilson came to fame in the 90s with his band Porcupine Tree, with whom he created a one-man modern progressive rock/psychedelic scene completely out of step with both the pop and alternative scenes of the time. Wilson’s bloody-mindedness and the sheer musicality of his work cut through, however, and by the 2000’s Porcupine Tree had released a number of acclaimed albums on Roadrunner, and amassed a massive worldwide cult following for their modern classic rock.

Wilson called an end to Porcupine Tree after ten albums in 2010, and began recording and touring as a solo artist. His latest and best-selling solo album To The Bone, was released in late 2017.

Wilson has also become known for his 5.1 surround sound mixes. Having received a Grammy Award in the "Best Mix For Surround Sound" category for the 2007 Porcupine Tree album Fear of a Blank Planet, he became the man in demand in this area, and he has subsequently remixed the classic Jethro Tull, Yes and King Crimson catalogues, as well as other titles by artists ranging from Caravan and Gentle Giant to Anathema to XTC. Most recently he did the job on Roxy Music’s classic debut for a new deluxe edition.

Ahead of Steven Wilson’s upcoming Australian tour, ILYOS looks at a couple of classic tracks from his Jethro Tull and Yes remix work, and a couple from Porcupine Tree’s classic final album The Incident, which got them another Grammy nomination for “Best Surround Sound Album“ and which earned them the “Best Band” award in Classic Rock Magazine.
