The Mollusk Turns 20

Ween’s nautical themed psychedelic concept album, The Mollusk, was released on June 24 1997, making it exaclty 20years old today. It's still just as bizarre. In a good way.

A dark nautical themed album incorporating many genres, with most songs including elements from psychedelia and sea shanties and a heavy progressive rock influence. According to Dean Ween, "I will say that the only record that I ever felt really confident about was The Mollusk. That's my favorite record we've ever done”.

The main hook of the lead single off the album, “Mutilated Lips”, became instantly familiar and made little sense, but hey, that’s Ween.

“Mutilated lips give a kiss on the wrist
Of the worm like tips of tentacles expanding
In my mind, I'm fine, accepting only fresh brine
You can get another drop of this, yeah you wish”

"Mutilated Lips" live in Chicago in 2003

Whilst the album only peaked at #159 in the Billboard 200, it further solidified the bands cult following and earned them the title as one of the most revered alternative bands of the 90s.

Remind yourself of the weird beauty of this record
