Keys decided to pay tribute to the band by inviting non-other than Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the stage for a jangly cover of their classic 1983 single ‘This Charming Man’.
While Keys and Marr may seem like an odd pairing, it’s not the first time the pair have previously joined forces. Back in 2014, they recorded a song together for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack and even performed it live together on Fallon.
Keys reportedly told the crowd at one point during her AO Arena set, “I’ve talked a lot about New York tonight,” according to Spin. “Now I want to talk about Manchester.” Marr then appeared onstage to accompany her for a rendition of one of the Smiths' signature songs, This Charming Man.

Earlier this year, Johnny Marr released his fourth solo album, Fever Dreams Pts 1 – 4. Cited as one of his “most expansive work to date”, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 was created during the long and uncertain UK lockdowns, when his focus was pushed into both his interior life, and evoking the emotional states of others. “It’s an inspired record, and I couldn’t wait to get in and record every day,” he says. “But I had to go inwards.” Get Fever Dreams Pts 1 – 4 on vinyl and CD, here.

“There’s a set of influences and a very broad sound that I’ve been developing - really since getting out of The Smiths,” Marr says. “And I hear it in this record. There are so many strands of music in it. I think it’s the most ambitious solo record I’ve done.”
