The legendary Billie Holiday was one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Adored by fans across the globe, Holiday was a leading voice of the civil rights movement, for her poetic, honest lyrics as much for her fearless commitment to performing them live. Throughout the 1940s, Holiday was targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics who aimed to silence her, in particular, stop her singing her heart-wrenching ballad “Strange Fruit” about racial murders in the South, to the massive audiences she drew. 

These are, of course, massive shoes to fill. But in an upcoming film titled, The United Stated Vs. Billie Holiday, Grammy-nominated singer, Andra Day does just that, portraying the iconic artist and her integral presence during a turning point in history. Ultimately, the film “unapologetically presents the icon’s complicated, irrepressible life.” Watch her stunning performance in the official trailer below.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday is directed by Oscar-winner Lee Daniels and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Park. Starring alongside Andra Day is Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is The New Black) and Miss Lawrence. The film debuts overseas next month – we will keep you posted for an Aussie release date! 

Celebrating her feature-acting debut as Holiday, Day has just released a searing cover of “All Of Me” which will be featured on the film’s forthcoming soundtrack. You can listen below.
