Joni Mitchell has made a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival this past weekend (July 24), delivering a 13-track set in her first extensive public performance since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015.
Mitchell, 78, was joined on stage by close friend Brandi Carlile during her set, which she performed largely from an armchair centre stage. The set included many of Joni’s most beloved hits, including A Case of You, Just Like This Train, Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi, Summertime and Circle Game, among others.
It was her first appearance at the Newport Folk Festival since 1969, when she shared the bill with Arlo Guthrie and the Everly Brothers. Along with Carlile, Mitchell was joined by Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd, Lucius, Taylor Goldsmith and others.
