Madonna Offers Julia Garner Lead Role in Upcoming Biopic

It was almost two years ago now, in September 2020, that Madonna first announced via social media that she was in the process of writing a biopic about her own life and career in collaboration with actress Diablo Cody (Juno) and screenwriter, Erin Cressida Wilson (SecretaryThe Girl on the Train). Read more, here.

Since then, news about the upcoming film has been pretty sparse, which is no surprise, considering the massive hurdles large scale productions have had to endure in recent times. But it seems that Madge has stayed well and truly on task, spending “months” putting would-be hopefuls for the lead role through a “gruelling” audition process, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that included 11-hour choreography sessions, as well as reading and singing auditions with Madge herself.

Unsurprisingly, there were some big names who put their hands up to portray the legendary pop singer, including Euphoria actress Florence Pugh and singer Sky Ferreira, but it was Ozark star, Julia Garner who emerged the favourite and, according to Variety, is close to accepting a deal for the massively coveted role as the younger Madonna Ciccone.

Garner is well-known for her Emmy winning role as the tenacious Ruth Langmore on the Netflix series Ozark and has recently earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of the masterful New York high-society scam artist Anna Delvey in Netflix’s Inventing Anna.

Perhaps Garner’s ability to harness the spirit of determination captured Madonna’s imagination, with the film set to chronicle the Queen of Pop's meteoric rise, starting from virtually nowhere and growing into a chart-topping juggernaut, style icon, an often-controversial, queen of perpetual reinvention, with a staying power that makes her, still, the bestselling female artist — 335 million records worldwide —  of all-time and holder of the highest-grossing solo touring numbers ever.

Madonna is expected to direct the film, working off of a script she has co-written with Cody and Wilson. “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” the singer said in a previous statement about the project. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

Last month, Madonna announced an extensive new, career-spanning collection Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones, celebrating 40 years of her iconic club hits. A 16-track version, Finally Enough Love will be available on streaming on June 24th (pre-order here), followed by the full 50-track edition, Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones, to be released on August 19th, in 3-CD and 6-LP limited-edition black and red vinyl formats. Pre-order here.
