Morrissey’s new album of covers, California Son, includes songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Laura Nyro, Dionne Warwick, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and many more.
The song that piques our interest is "Wedding Bell Blues", originally written and recorded by Laura Nyro in 1966. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a young woman whose boyfriend has not yet proposed to her. The title subsequently became a popular phrase in pop culture.
The best-known version was a #1 hit for the 5th Dimension in 1969 in the US, and #20 here in Australia.
On California Son, Morrissey teams up with punk-rocker Billie Joe from Green Day for "Wedding Bell Blues", and there's just something about the way Morrissey croons "But kisses and love won't carry me, til you marry me, Bill" sung in harmony with Billie Joe that is both endearing and funny.
