Sydney’s annual Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of Australia’s biggest celebrations, bringing tens of thousands of people to celebrate pride in a joyous kaleidoscope of self-expression.

In 1995, the famously androgynous Boy George headlined the massive celebrations at the Royal Hall of Industries, delivering a triumphant performance of his Hare Krishna-themed-hit Bow Down Mister that, somehow, managed to merge religion and spandex hot pants seamlessly. Fellow British music icons, the Pet Shop Boys were spotted in the crowd on the night. Watch below!

Boy George wrote Bow Down Mister after a trip he took to India in the early 90s. At first, the song was seen as a somewhat controversial offering from the pop singer. But, as with many things, George offered up an entirely different perspective, explaining that he never meant for the song to be perceived as radical, “That is unless you consider a song that encourages love instead of hate as being radical.”
