Red Hot Chili Peppers first formed in 1983, bringing together a group of Los Angeles misfits on a mission to funk up rock music, of America and beyond. Like the trailblazing punks that came before them, the Chili’s navigated the trappings of hedonism, revelling in the boisterous themes while forging real change, propelled by the power of youth.

The Peppers’ original lineup, consisting of singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons, made their television debut in 1984 on Thicke of the Night hosted by Alan Thicke. Dressed in expansive raver pants, a bare-chested Kiedis and Flea give a bizarre interview that includes an animated reenactment of their kooky tricks to “pick up girls” that we are SURE never afforded them any success; and a quick fire back and forth between Flea and Thicke about, of all things, Annie.

After a brief nonsensical chat, the band launch into a full-throttle performance of Get Up And Jump, a burning amalgamation of funk and rock that shows, for all their goofy antics, it’s truly no wonder they continue to light up stages almost four decades later.
