Bowie’s flame-haired cosmic alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust was beamed to TV for the very first time in 1972, illuminating British lounge rooms with a radiant rendition of the cosmic hit, Starman. It was the second single released from his now-iconic, and wildly unique concept album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars – the perfect song to introduce the interstellar glam-rock hero at its centre.

With a pure blend of vision, confidence and conviction, staring straight down the barrel of the camera, Bowie inspired a cultural revolution, mesmerising his audience like a baroque Pied Piper, ushering in a new age of music, style and fashion with his infectious and otherworldly joy – it was the precise moment he became a major star.

Over the years, Bowie would transform himself time and time again, introducing us to a cast of characters along the way. But imagine what it would have been like to witness this otherworldly reincarnation for the very first time, live on the BBC’s stalwart music programme.

Effortless flamboyance with pure conviction, ushering in an age of wild individuality – one can only imagine that, for a brief moment, Britain stood still.
