On the eve of Ol’55’s first run of reunion gigs – which includes two big co-headliner shows THIS WEEK (Thursday November 24 at the Palais in St Kilda, and Friday November 25 at the Sydney State Theatre) with the also rarely-spotted Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons – we asked Wilbur Wilde, legendary sax man for both bands, to give us his favourite 10 sax tunes. The man knows his sax players obviously.
Check out the tunes below, and grab your Ol’55/Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons tix here. Ol’55 are also playing Jupiter’s on the Gold Coast Saturday November 26 and the Gympie civic Centre November 27 – more dates in the new year!
David Bowie - Young Americans
First time I'd heard David Sanborn and he tears it up.
Bryan Ferry - Let’s Stick Together
Great rock solo from Chris Mercer.
Steely Dan - Deacon Blues
Pete Christlieb plays just beautifully on this track.
Billy Joel - Just the Way You Are
Really tasty alto playing from the mighty Phil woods.
Cold Chisel - My Baby
Joe’s solo on this is a ripper and I was there on the day when he played it straight from the soul.
Blood, Sweat & Tears - God Bless the Child
Intense swinging horn playing from Fred Lipsius and Lew Soloff.
Sting - Bring On The Night (live)
It’s actually Kenny Kirkland's piano that blows my mind here, Branford is grouse but.
Garland Jeffries - I May Not Be Your Kind
Michael Becker is king here.
Peter Tosh with Mick Jagger - You Gotta Walk (Don’t Look Back)
Gorgeous melodic solo I have copied anytime I've played this tune.
Georgie Fame - Got to Get on This Train
Take it downtown baby!
And in case you missed it - there a new 2-disc 56-track collection Ol’55’s Time To Rock’n’Roll: The Anthology out now, available as a 2CD, digital download, or to stream. Find out more here.
