David Byrne’s American Utopia show underwent a makeover for its return to Broadway this week, featuring a new setlist and modified stage show that unearthed some Talking Heads classics.
The reworked show, titled American Utopia: Unchained, came about after several cast members tested positive for coronavirus. In a Facebook post, Byrne explained that “rather than us cancelling our shows, we’re looking at this as a kind of opportunity to, well, honour our commitment to the audiences who are coming in the coming weeks and creating something special.”
The singer then went on to describe the reimagined American Utopia: Unchained as “something, unlike anything we’ve done before.”
Some of Talking Heads’ most beloved hits, including Life During Wartime, Heaven, (Nothing but) Flowers and And She Was featured in the debut night’s setlist, alongside a few of Byrne’s own solo hits like Everyone’s In Love With You and Strange Overtones and stripped back reworking of American Utopia regulars like Road To Nowhere. Speaking about the reworked show, Byrne said: “We’re having a great time learning this stuff and a lot of fun doing it. It’s gonna be amazing. I’m excited about it. I think it shows that we can adapt and persevere.”
