Newly-unearthed footage of Led Zeppelin’s 1970 performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden is whipping the Internet into a frenzy.
The fully-restored 8mm film footage captures Led Zepp’s evening show on September 19th (they had also performed an afternoon matinee show on the same day). With undeniably blazing footage setting a standard in rock, unparalleled til this day, it’s easy to see why the band’s fans and hardcore aficionados are treating this discovery like a classic rock Christmas miracle.
The 8mm reel was shared on YouTube by user Ikhnaton on May 25th, and has already racked up almost 100,000 views. The two minute 48 second clip cuts together snippets of set opener, the then unreleased, Immigrant Song, and its follow up, Heartbreaker. Watch below!
Led Zeppelin | Madison Square Garden [1970] [Evening Show]
This Zeppelin show at Madison Square Garden is widely considered by critics to be “one of their best ever” (according to LedZeppelin.com) and, judging by the viewers’ comments, it seems that the fans most certainly agree!
YouTube user, DemoMan, who “was at the afternoon show that day” said that he had seen “them 5 times over the years but they were the best ever on this day. None of the sloppiness that became part of their charm over time. Plant’s voice was super strong almost as high as the studio!”.
Deadringer added, “It's amazing to me how just under 3 minutes of fragmented Zeppelin footage is still better than any other band on the planet.“ While user, Simon Perry sums up the overriding sentiment of the comments perfectly, declaring the footage to be ”Holy grail stuff right here.”

Last month’s announcement about the upcoming Becoming Led Zeppelin documentary nearly broke the internet, partly for the fact that, across the entirety of their incredible five-decade career, this is the first-ever documentary to be officially authorised by the classic rock icons, with director Bernard McMahon being granted “unprecedented access” to the band’s archives.
