It’s fair to say, there may have been no band better prepared for the current state of live music as the Flaming Lips. Once again, they’ve stepped out in their signature giant plastic bubbles – which frontman, Wayne Coyne has been crowd surfing in for years – for a socially distanced performance of recent single, “God and the Policeman” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“God and the Policeman” is the latest release from the band’s 16th studio album, American Head which arrived last week (September 12th) to high acclaim. Watch the performance tailor-made for these unprecedented times below.

In a recent interview with Spin, Wayne Coyne reflected on the possibility of replicating their replicate their appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this year when they performed in front of a live audience, who were also safely inside their own giant bubbles (watch here).

“That’s gonna be the next phase,” he mused. “As the end of September comes along, we’re probably gonna try to do it. As ridiculous as it sounds. I just don’t know how good the concert would be, but I do know the virus wouldn’t be contagious doing it like this.”

In a four-star review of the Flaming Lips’ new LP, American Head,  NME described the album as a “beautiful ode to love and loss that handles the subjects with grace,” and compared it to their 1999 breakthrough, The Soft Bulletin. Get your copy here.
