Rock In Rio Festival took place this past weekend featuring a stellar line up of bands and artists. Foo Fighters, who headlined, were treated to a special tribute from Weezer who played the main stage ahead of them.

Weezer's frontman Rivers Coumo told the crowd, “We’re gonna cover a song from Dave Grohl’s old band to tide you over” ahead of breaking into "Lithium" from Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind.

Dave Grohl responded emotionally; “I heard them play Lithium…I gotta be honest, I cried a little bit. I did! I miss playing that song, I miss it, so happy to hear Weezer play it again.” He then acknowledge the gesture and returned it by dedicating "Big Me" to Weezer during their epic headline set.

There seems to be a lot of love between the two bands, Rivers told Rolling Stone Magazine in 2014 that he thought of himself as "Nirvana's biggest fan in the nineties."

Weezer are prone to a good cover, having released a whole album of them earlier this year. The Teal Album includes their interpretations of classics by everyone from Toto to TLC.
