He is a man that needs no introduction, at times in his career, he didn’t even need a name. Prince’s career was defined by master showmanship, a level of which has, arguably, never before or seen since he left us in 2016. Enjoy six of his best music videos below!
1. Prince & The Revolution | ‘Kiss’
Kiss was a number one hit around the world, holding the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks. After basically proving himself the Mozart of rock with 1984’s Purple Rain, Prince showed he could also deliver one of his finest works in a succinct and cheeky pop song.
2. Prince & The Revolution | ‘Raspberry Beret’
This super catchy hit from Prince’s 1985 LP titled, Around The World In a Day arrived with this kaleidoscopic music video, which, if you watch closely, features appearances from actress Jackie Swanson, best known for her lead role in Cheers and guitarist Pat Smear, who played with both Nirvana and Foo Fighters.
3. Prince | ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ [Live At Paisley Park, 1999]
This incredible rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U, the song made into a global smash by Sinead O’Connor, comes from his legendary ’Rave Un2 The Year 2000’ pay-per-view special from Paisley Park that aired on New Year’s Eve in 1999. Be prepared, this one really tugs on the heartstrings.
4. Prince & The Revolution | ‘Let's Go Crazy’
The opener from Prince’s 1984 magnum opus, Purple Rain, Let’s Go Crazy was one his most popular tracks live, because it’s basically a party in a song. But, even the official music video for anthemic track is an undeniable amp up!
5. Prince | ‘Little Red Corvette’
Little Red Corvette was Prince's his first Top 10 US hit. The brassy ode to casual sex propelled him to superstar status when this electrifying music video hit high rotation on MTV in 1982.
6. Prince | ‘Purple Rain’
And of course, could there be any better finale than the Earth-shattering power-ballad, Purple Rain? One of Prince’s signature songs arrived as the title-track from his 1984 album of the same name, which in turn, soundtracked a film starring Prince, also titled, by the same name. You could say it was the moment Prince truly arrived as an artist, showing the creative force of his mercurial mind that could deliver a mega-hit in all mediums and proving himself much more than a pop star, rather a master showman.
Purple Rain became Prince’s first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200, spending a total of 24 weeks at number one, and more than 32 weeks in the Top 10, making it one of the most successful soundtracks of all-time. Prince and the Revolution won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, while Prince completed the trifecta with winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for the film Purple Rain.
