Remembering Alanis Morissette’s Fearless TV Debut with 'You Oughta Know' on David Letterman in 1995

We’re going back to Alanis Morissette’s truly jaw-dropping television debut in 1995 when she appeared on the David Letterman Show for the very first time to perform the cutting lead single from Jagged Little Pill, You Oughta Know.

She stares down the cameraman, daring him to keep up with her, fierce, vulnerable and unapologetic as she delivers the scathing lyrics; and there’s no doubt she means every single word. It’s easy to forget that Morissette was only 21 at this moment (even younger when she penned the massive single), virtually reinventing the idea of a commercial hit with a wildly honest global smash, with a band who took barely old enough to be out of high school – you’ll even find late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins slamming the drums behind her, looking like a teenager himself.

At the end of the performance, there’s a split-second, stunned silence before the audience erupts cheering, clearly trying to figure out exactly what they just witnessed.

Enjoy the epic entrance below!
