Kate Bush has shared a new statement celebrating the recent chart success of her 1985 song Running Up That Hill, which has spent the past few weeks climbing to the top of charts all over the world, after featuring in a pivotal scene in the latest season of sci-fi horror series, Stranger Things. In a twist stranger than fiction, that scene has put Kate Bush head to head in a global chart battle with One Direction member, now solo, pop star, Harry Styles.
Here in Australia, Running Up That Hill has knocked Styes out of the top spot to earn her first-ever number one on the ARIA singles chart. In her UK homeland, Styles is at number one on the Official UK Singles Chart and Bush at number two, a new career peak for the pop icon. And in America, Bush earned her first-ever number one on the Billboard album chart last week and cracked the Billboard Top 10 for the first time. This week, she has contiued to climb to number four.
Running Up That Hill has also smashed through streaming charts, currently sitting at number two on both the Spotify and Apple global charts, and at number one on the Australian streaming charts.
Bush has shared a rare public statement, reflecting on the song’s sudden and unexpected resurgence and thanking everyone for their support, via her official website.
"How utterly brilliant! It's hard to take in the speed at which this has all been happening since the release of the first part of the Stranger Things new series. So many young people who love the show, discovering the song for the first time. The response to Running Up That Hill is something that has had its own energy and volition.”

Bush also shared her love for Stranger Things in a previous statement, saying that she had “watched every series” of the show and “really loved it”.
